Traveling Tips...When Travelling with Sporting Weapons
Confirm you put
TIP 1 |
When commuting through New York, Washington and Atlanta please make sure you have a minimum of 2hrs between flights, after recent research it shows that 83% of firearms did not make it to South Africa on the same flight as the owner, if the in-transit period was less than 2hrs. |
TIP 2 |
After arriving in SA and need to take a connecting flight give yourself a minimum of 3hrs between arrival and departure to your next destination. |
TIP 3 |
Confirm you put your firearm in an approved airline firearm case. Do not pack your firearm in your checked luggage in an ordinary suitcase. |
TIP 4

Ammunition must be packed in a locked box with a key or combination lock. The ammunition can travel in your checked bag from the USA [on either Delta or SAA] but once it reaches South Africa and needs to go on a regional or domestic carrier, it needs to be taken out of your bag and be sent separately alongside your firearm case. |
TIP 5 |
Please mark your firearm case clearly with your name, address and contact number, often we find cases with no identification on them and struggle to get them returned to the owner as we have to search the lost luggage files at the airlines and get a description of the bag before trying to trace it's owner. |
TIP 6 |
Make sure you have the US customs forms 4457 or your license (depending on where you come from) when you leave home, we had a fair number of people arriving without proof of ownership and wanting to get a temporary firearm permit on arrival, The Embassy of the United State has been helpful in this regard, but you do loose 2/3 days of your hunt getting the right paperwork together. |

We are based at Lanseria Airport, Africa's busiest and most dynamic airport. It is home to the largest collection of corporate aircraft on the continent, and has a significant maintenance infrastructure. We also operate from Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport and Cape Town International Airport and licensed to fly to any destination in Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands.

Company Profile
Founded in 1981, Air 2000 (Pty) Ltd is a Non-Scheduled Air Services Licence holder, authorized by the South African Civil Aviation Authority to operate aircraft for charter services. The company has a variety of aircraft in its fleet, and can offer cost-effective options for flights throughout Africa.
For many years, Air 2000 has actively pursued the US and European leisure hunting markets, establishing alliances with operators throughout sub-Saharan Africa, and traveling regularly to conventions in the US to promote air charter as a safe, cost-effective and convenient travel option for visiting hunters.
In 1989, Air 2000 launched the "Hunters' Support" service, to provide hunters with a comprehensive range of services that ensured a smooth arrival in Africa, a trouble-free transfer to the hunting camp,
pre- and post-hunt travel arrangements, and a comfortable departure at the end of the hunt. The service includes the arrangement of Firearm Import Permits, meet and greet services at Johannesburg's OR Tambo or Cape Town International Airports, airport/hotel transfers, and, of course, air charter services.

Air 2000 Hunters’ Support Service in South Africa can arrange the following services:

Rules and Regulations
In line with international trends, South Africa's Firearms Control, Act 2000 has been implemented in its entirety. Applications for Multiple Import or Export Permits / temporary Import of Export Permits / In transit permits for personal use can be made prior to your arrival in South Africa and be ready and waiting at your airport of arrival.
To obtain these permits on your behalf we need to clarify in short the following:
| 1. | You can temporarily import a maximum of four firearms per hunter but not more than one of the same calibre. |
| 2. | You may only bring ammunition applicable to the firearms that you will be carrying. |
| 3. | No person under the age of 21 may bring firearms into South Africa or apply for a temporary import permit in his / her name. |
| 4. | The barrel, frame or action is to be marked with the same serial number. |
| 5. | Semi automatic shotguns for bird shooting or a customs made handgun can be bought into South Africa for hunting purposes only. |
| 6. | No self protection firearms allowed. |
| 7. | In transit permits are required by any passenger spending the night in South Africa while in transit to a third country. The same pre- requisites apply as to obtain the normal temporary import permit. A fee is no longer payable for this permit as from 28th November 2005. |

Aircraft
Air 2000 have a variety of aircraft available for hunters to charter. Choice of aircraft depends on the runway surface and length at the destination, distances between stops, the number of passengers, and the speed and comfort required. All aircraft are maintained to the same standards laid down by the Federal Aviation Administration, whilst the pilots are qualified to the same levels that you would expect to find in a US charter operation.
Charter in Southern Africa is remarkably effective; there is a wide range of aircraft available, fuel and airfields are plentiful, well maintained and strategically located to all the principal hunting areas.
Light Piston-Engine Aircraft
These are an ideal alternative to driving around Southern Africa. With a choice of seating configurations, you can have between 4 and 6 passengers accommodated in these aircraft.

Meet and Greet
For your convenience, Air 2000 offers a unique concierge service to assure you of a stress free arrival in South Africa. You are welcomed with a personalised name board at arrival - either OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg or Cape Town International Airport. You will be assisted with immigration, baggage collection, identification of firearms and/or bows before going through customs. Once formalities are completed, you will be assisted to the charter aircraft or onward scheduled flight.
